Alex Couwenberg: A Bit Left of All Right @ William Turner
Couwengberg riffs on mid-century modern furniture and hard-edge painting like Karl Benjamin’s by layering and repeating forms–scraping color over color. In some areas the colors are opaque, in others they give glimpses to the colors and shapes below or sometimes the raw birch panel. He particularly favors a shape like a fat, squat surfboard with the ends cropped, but also likes lozenges and other forms that lie somewhere in between curved biomorphic and regular geometric shapes. Couwenberg is discriminating in his color combos–like orange, ochre, beige or blue, grey, cream or green, moss, white. He’s shown elsewhere in LA, but this is his first solo show with William Turner Gallery.

Beili Liu: Three Thousand Troubled Threads @ Tarryn Teresa
I haven’t seen this artist’s work in person but it sounds like it’s worth checking out:
“Tarryn Teresa Gallery is pleased to present Three Thousand Troubled Threads, a site-specific installation by Austin-based artist Beili Liu. A series of related but distinct installations created with everyday materials such as needles and thread, Liu’s exhibit is united by ‘the visual metaphor of lines’ and the ambiguity it creates.”
