#MadeinLA @hammer_museum (***) Did I just accidentally walk into a thesis show? This is supposedly the most original, innovative art in LA?
4:41 PM – 2 Sep 12
This is as worrisome as the MOCA debacle. #MadeinLA
4:46 PM – 2 Sep 12
Much of the work is too thin on ideas & skill–the dreaded double whammy of amateurish intellectuality and juvenile craftsmanship. #MadeinLA
4:46 PM – 2 Sep 12
Disappointment of rehashed ideas from not-ready-4-primetime grads wasn’t buoyed any by the humdrum work of the “under-recognized” old guard.
4:52 PM – 2 Sep 12
A few gems in the dregs–Meleko Mokgosi (deserved Mohn winner), Joel Otterson, Kathryn Andrews, Koki Tanaka & Lisa Williamson. #MadeinLA
5:11 PM – 2 Sep 12
Out of time to run around to three locations. Sorry I missed Cayetano Ferrer, as I only went to the Hammer. #MadeinLA
5:14 PM – 2 Sep 12
.@Powhida A bit of hyperbole perhaps, but the effort to subliminally promote UCLA students/faculty/friends is still troublesome. #MadeinLA
5:18 PM – 2 Sep 12
.@Powhida @AntiPainter They don’t make it obvious–no CVs in the catalog. You have to spend days Googling everyone. Which I did. #MadeinLA
10:59 AM – 4 Sep 12
Of the 60 artists in #MadeinLA, 15 have ties to (BFA, MFA, Teach) UCLA, 17 have ties to CalArts & 8 have ties to BOTH schools.
11:17 AM – 4 Sep 12
That means 40 of 60 (66.67%) have ties to UCLA/CalArts. Only 20 (33.33%) come from all other schools combined. #MadeinLA
11:19 AM – 4 Sep 12
Perhaps the addition of a CalArts bias this year is due to the collaboration w/ LAXART. Malik Gaines has Writing MFA from CalArts. #MadeinLA
11:21 AM – 4 Sep 12
I also see several repeat players from previous LAXART shows and the OCMA Biennial that Lauri Firstenberg guest curated in 2008. #MadeinLA
11:22 AM – 4 Sep 12
The whole purpose of this exhibition is 2 showcase these 66%, but it would behoove them 2 be more selective from their own clique. #MadeinLA
11:32 AM – 4 Sep 12
Wouldn’t it be nice if the curators widened their circle next time and actually looked at some art instead of CVs. #MadeinLA
11:40 AM – 4 Sep 12
