3 x 3 @ LA Louver

3 x 3 (“Three by Three”) celebrates the work of three painters and three sculptors of different generations, backgrounds and artistic approach, who egage in a dialogue with abstraction. Each artist uniquely explores the boundaries of form, color and surface, to question the very nature of how painting or sculpture is defined.”

Also, while you’re there, run upstairs to see Sol LeWitt, Gouache on Paper 1987-2005.

Give It a Whirl – September 19, 2009

Eric Johnson: Recent Works @ William Turner

“Inspired by both art and science, Eric Johnson creates composite works of pigment, wood and resin. The handcrafted abstract works are sheathed in resin skins, often revealing glimpses of skeletal armatures and hidden architectures. Over the past twelve years, the structures have become organic and revealing to their formation. The current work merges the passion for depth and structure with an obsession for color and surface.”

Give It a Whirl – September 12, 2009

When it comes to this event-filled, season-opening weekend, everyone’s been mentioning the heavy-hitters like Bruce Nauman and Doug Aiken which are certainly worthy of attention, but I’d like to spotlight some of the unmentioned shows that you really should see. Whether you’re planning on hanging out in Chinatown, Mid-town, or the West Side, hopefully you’ll be able to stop by one of these shows.

Libby Black: Timeless @ Charlie James Gallery

Libby, well-known in the Bay Area for her 2005 installation of a simulated Kate Spade store at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, will be showing paintings, drawings and sculpture in her LA solo debut.  She explores the allure of fashion and shopping and why we buy in works that are just as desirable as the luxury goods they depict.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 6-9pm

Charlie James Gallery
975 Chung King Road
Los Angeles, CA 90012

September 12 – October 17, 2009

Ruth Pastine: Limitless @ Edward Cella Art + Architecture

Ruth’s LA solo debut will feature very subtle and luminous color-field paintings.  She sticks to a well-defined system, and obsessively layers wet-on-wet strokes of oil paint, but rather than coming off cool and mechanical, they seem to be all nature and real light.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 5-8pm

Edward Cella Art + Architecture
6018 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90036

September 12 – October 31, 2009

Jimi Gleason & Jesse Simon @ Samuel Freeman

I hear Jimi is doing something different in his new paintings.  While they still shimmer with metallic pigments, he’s splitting fields of varying colors on multiple surfaces.  Jesse is also on to something fresh, moving away from the representation of earlier large works, and making more intimate abstract sculptures from his recycled surfboards.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 5-7pm

Samuel Freeman Gallery
2525 Michigan Avenue, B-7
Santa Monica, CA 90404

September 12 – October 17, 2009

Give It a Whirl – Saturday, August 22, 2009

Wet Paint: Ten Young LA Painters @ Steve Turner

Wet Paint is an eight day exhibition of works created during the past few months by ten young local artists selected from a pool of candidates recommended by local instructors and artists.  The painters in the exhibition are Daniel Cummings, Michael Dopp, Greg Kozaki, Anne McCaddon, Caitlin Lonegan, RJ Messineo, Michael Rey, Ana Rodriguez, Conrad Ruiz and Rowan Wood. There is no organizing theme or dominant style in the works, but painting is showcased as alive and well and still a relevant platform in Los Angeles.

The show will be on view for eight days only, from August 22 through August 29, 2009. During this week, from Saturday to Saturday, the gallery will be open every day from 11am to 9pm. Each evening from 6pm to 9pm, at least two of the painters will be at the gallery to discuss his or her work.

Gary Lang: Circles Lines Grids @ Ace Beverly Hills

Since the early 1980s, Lang has explored his Circles, Lines, and Grid paintings which combine chance, lyricism, textures, and rhythm. From a distance, all of his works appear to be precisely painted, almost machine-made, but up-close they are obviously hand-made without the use of rulers or tape.

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, July 16, 7:30-9pm

9430 Wilshire Boulevard
Beverly Hills, CA 90212

July 16 – August 29, 2009
